Greenhouse Manager Electa Ward Shows You How to Start Native Plant Seeds

You can grow native plants from seed at home just like we do at the nursery. Different plants require different treatments, and a variety of methods are used to trigger seeds into breaking dormancy. Some need months in a freezer, others require light sanding with sandpaper to weaken tough seed husks, while others might need a hot water bath. Right now we’re sowing seeds with a relatively short cold stratification time, and in this video, Electa shares how she starts some of the many native plants we grow.

She uses codes developed by Prairie Moon Nursery, one of our sources for the native plant seed sold in our garden shop. We have free copies of their detailed instructions available on our seed rack. We also offer native plant seeds from Buffalo Seed Co and Native American Seed.
