With long-lasting, flat-topped blooms, yarrow species are ubiquitous along roadsides and in open fields. Feathery fern-like foliage is an attractive foil to other plants even when not in bloom. Many butterflies are attracted to the nectar. Many species of moths and other insects use the foliage as a larval host. Plants spread by rhizomes and prefer well-drained, medium-to-sandy soils.
