Get Garden Soil & Mulch in Tip-top Shape for Spring

Mulch isn’t just good-looking, it’s functional, and soil improvement is the most important thing you can do for your garden. Adding fresh compost and mulch in spring makes your summer gardening so much easier because:

  • compost adds vital nutrients plants need to thrive
  • compost and decomposing mulch improve soil structure to hold moisture and oxygen for healthy plant roots
  • mulch suppresses weeds
  • mulch regulates soil temperature

In spring while the soil is still weed-free, herbaceous plants are just beginning to pop up and the soil is warming. It’s an ideal time for spreading a thin layer of fresh mulch over existing beds. If you’ve left dried perennials and grasses for winter interest and wildlife, you can mulch around those stalks to leave in place until temperatures reach 50° to protect native bees and others residing there while taking stock of plants you want to add this year. A layer of compost followed by enough mulch to give a couple of inches of cover is ideal for garden beds. Keep it loose to allow newly emerging plants to find their way through.

Late winter is also the perfect time to create new beds for spring planting. We use cardboard to suppress turf and weeds followed by a layer of compost and topped with three to four inches of fresh mulch. When installing raised beds we use a 50/50 mix of compost and topsoil.

Use recycled cardboard to create new areas or purchase cardboard by the yard at the nursery.

We offer two grades of clean, hardwood mulch and organic, pulverized compost. Our topsoil is free of debris and pulverized. We load by the tractor bucket into your truck bed or trailer at the nursery any time during regular business hours.

Too busy to do it yourself? Let us do the heavy lifting. We can deliver and/or install compost and mulch for you.
