Chestnuts, hazelnuts, acorns, walnuts, and pecans are classified as ‘true nuts’ which are, botanically speaking, actually fruits.
Some nuts we eat are not fruit. A more general definition of a nut is ‘a fruit or seed with a hard shell enclosing an edible or oil-yielding kernel’. Brazil nuts, pine nuts, pistachios, and peanuts are all, botanically, seeds rather than fruit.
