golden Alexander

Zizia aurea

An easy to grow short-lived native that will self-seed and thrive in a variety of conditions. Golden Alexanders have a long bloom time, giving the garden long-lasting, early color in late spring to early summer when many other plants have not yet begun to open up. Golden Alexanders will tolerate a lot of shade but prefer full sun or light shade. NATIVE TO THE EASTERN HALF OF THE U.S.

Black Swallowtail caterpillars will feed on its leaves, and many lepidotera species rely on its nectar. Zizia is a member of the carrot family.
