golden Alexander

Zizia aurea

An easy-to-grow short-lived native that will self-seed and thrive in a variety of conditions. Golden Alexanders have a long bloom time, giving the garden long-lasting, early color in late spring to early summer when many other plants have not yet begun to open up. Golden Alexanders will tolerate a lot of shade but prefer full sun or light shade.

Black Swallowtail caterpillars will feed on its leaves, and many lepidotera species rely on its nectar. Zizia is a member of the carrot family.
