Cousin of the native prickly pear, this rare cactus features swirling variegation on the pads. Magenta blooms add to the spectacle of this cool succulent that is sure to be a favorite in any collector’s sunroom.
Opuntia species have fine, barbed bristles called glochids that can be hard to see but easy to get under your skin. Use caution whenever working with cactuses!
Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water in winter to prevent rot. Use containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil or mix potting mix with 70% to 80% sand, pumice, and/or perlite. Water deeply and wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again. Cactuses can be moved outdoors in summer months.
