American elm

Ulmus americana

‘Valley Forge’ is a Dutch elm disease tolerant selection introduced after 20 years of research. Classic American elm shape and the tolerance to air pollution and poor soil conditions of the species, ‘Valley Forge’ offers a new opportunity to plant an old American favorite. Grows 60–80’ tall, up to 3’ per year once established. NATIVE TO THE EASTERN HALF OF THE U.S.

‘Frontier’ is an American hybrid cultivar, a United States National Arboretum introduction from a crossing of the European Field Elm Ulmus minor with the Chinese Elm Ulmus parvifolia. Combines a high level of tolerance to Dutch elm disease, moderate resistance to elm leaf beetle, small leaves, and a lovely red-purple autumn coloration. Released in 1990.
