Silky, fern-like foliage with bell-shaped, solitary, blue-violet, yellow, pink or white flowers. Blooms are followed by plume-like seedheads similar to some clematis and geum, have nice ornamental interest. One of the first spring flowers to bloom on the northern Great Plains.
