State tree of Kansas!
Broad open crown of widely spreading branches covered in lustrous, bright green foliage that changes to brilliant yellow in fall. They grow particularly well along lakes, rivers, and in marshy areas. Trees prefer sandy or silty soil, but will tolerate most anything. Cottonwood trees are the fastest growing trees in North America. A young tree can add 6 feet or more in height each year.
Native selections are seedless males. ‘Siouxland’ is a superior cottonless cottonwood introduced by South Dakota State University. Pyramidal and very fast-growing shade tree that grows 20—30’ wide.
