Showy evening primrose, or pink ladies, are native to the midwest. The evening primrose common name comes from the tendency of flowers in this family to open in the afternoon or evening, although some open in the morning. Masses of fragrant, bowl-shaped, 2-3 inch wide blooms age to rose-pink with deeper pink veining. Fruit is a narrow capsule about a half-inch long. Typically found in prairies, meadows, open woodlands, and roadsides in sandy soil.
