‘Handsome Hero’ hardy lotus

Nelumbo 'Handsome Hero'

6-9″ double pink flowers with erect inner petals and lower petals that droop giving a full appearance. This large hardy lotus can send shoots more than four feet tall.

Lotus need 6 hours of direct sunlight to flower. Blooms open in summer and fall.

Lotus roots must be submerged in water, but leaves should stay above the water’s surface.

Small lotus varieties can be grown in pots 16″ deep by 8″ wide, while larger types require a minimum of 32″ depth and 16″ width. When repotting try not to disturb plant roots. Place your plant in the middle of the new pot and carefully place loamy soil around the lotus to fill the container a third full. Then add pea gravel over the soil and fill the pot or bowl with water.

You can place the repotted lotus into a larger pond if desired. Just be sure not to submerge foliage.

Unlike water lilies that float on the water’s surface, lotus flowers and foliage open on stalks that rise above the water’s surface. They can get pretty tall!
