Earliest to bloom, cornelian cherries set bright red fruit in late summer. These large shrubs thrive in urban conditions and make a great specimen plant or hedge. Tight clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers in early spring cover bare branches before leaves emerge. The tree is native to Europe and Asia.
Fruit tastes similar to tart cherries and can be used for jams, jellies, pies, syrups, and wine. Fruit is high in vitamin C.
