A dense, rounded deciduous native with a suckering habit with very fragrant, brown to reddish-brown flowers 2″ across which open in May. Flowers give way to brownish, urn-shaped fruits that persist through winter. Lustrous, dark green elliptic leaves turn golden yellow in fall. Leaves are aromatic when bruised. Purchase plants when in flower to insure quality and intensity of the fragrance, which can vary widely from plant to plant.
