nodding onion

Allium cernuum

Easily grown in average soil in full sun to light shade. Plants naturalize by self-seeding and bulb offsets. Deadhead flowers before seed sets to control any unwanted spread. Distinguished from other alliums by its petals that bend sharply downward. All parts of the plant have an oniony smell when cut or bruised and the plant was once used in cooking. There are better culinary choices available today.
