Sycamore tussock moths winter in cocoons on their host trees. Adult moths emerge in spring, mate and then lay eggs under leaves and on bark. By early summer you can find fluffy white caterpillars among host trees.
These caterpillars emerge as adult moths in late summer, mate, and lay eggs that will hatch into a second wave of caterpillars at summer’s end. Those caterpillars will make cocoons in fall, where they’ll remain through winter and emerge as adults next spring to begin the cycle again!
