ostrich fern

Matteuccia struthiopteris

A clump-forming, upright, arching deciduous fern that can grow up to 6′ tall in moist, woodland settings. Fine, ferny fronds have the feathery appearance of long ostrich plumes. The vegetative fronds emerge at the narrow base of the clumps in spring as the familiar “fiddleheads.”
