Commonly called weeping fig, this broadleaf evergreen tree grows to 50’ tall in its native landscape. It is widely grown in the tropics as an ornamental tree or hedge. For many years, it is an extremely popular indoor houseplant here because of its attractive shape and tolerance for a variety of growing conditions.
Houseplants are more often grown in the 2-10’ tall range. Glossy, foliage grows on gracefully arching twigs. Native from India to northern Australia.
Grow Ficus trees in large pots filled with organic potting mix. Place pots indoors in bright indirect light, and outdoors in part shade during the warm summer months. Let the soil around the shrub dry out between waterings. Once the soil becomes dry, soak the roots thoroughly, allowing water to drain from the bottom of the container. Ficus trees tolerate drought well.
