virgin’s bower, woodbine

Clematis virginiana

White flowers abundantly spread along the length of the vine in panicles or small clusters and are often confused for sweet autumn clematis. Also nicknamed Devil’s Darning Needles and Prairie Smoke on a Rope for its similar looking seedhead to the native prairie smoke.

Flowers attract Halictid bees, wasps, and various flies. Foliage is used as nesting habitat for many songbirds.
